Fort Worth Biblical Counseling Association (FWBCA) exists to serve the church by helping “equip the saints” (Eph. 4:12) to bring the word of God to bear on theperplexing problems of life. We are primarily a conference ministry designed to ground men and women in practical theology within the framework of a biblical and systematic theology so that they can counsel biblically. The foundation of this ministry is the unshakable belief that the word of God is absolutely sufficient for all things pertaining to life and godliness (2 Pet. 1:3). Everything the child of God needs to please the Lord in every circumstance can be found in God’s written word and applied to life by the power of the Holy Spirit. Because biblical counseling is grounded in the ministry of the Spirit and the word, we believe every child of God who knows and trusts God’s word is competent to counsel.
HISTORY
Having recently retired the chair of the Biblical Counseling department at the Master’s University, seasoned pastor, author, and professor, Dr. Wayne Mack, found himself in casual conversation with Larry Randall at a national counseling conference. The conversation turned toward Dr. Mack’s desire to continue offering training in Biblical Counseling as the Lord provided opportunity. Randall, an experienced biblical counselor at Fort Worth’s Birchman Baptist Church, began to wonder, “What spiritual fruit might be born among the churches of our city should Dr. Mack agreed to offer his training here?” The proposal was made, Dr. Mack accepted, and a quarterly training conference in biblical counseling was born. It was January of 2000.
In the five years that followed, Dr. Mack and Carol, his wife, made the quarterly journey from Pennsylvania to Fort Worth to equip a small but eager group of pastors and ministry leaders to bring God’s sufficient word to bear on people’s problems. The impact on local churches over those years is incalculable. Several began fruitful church-based counseling ministries. Many men and women went on toachieve certification through the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (formerly NANC). A few churches even launched their own training ministries in Biblical Counseling. Moreover, many men and women learned that with the Spirit and the Word they were competent to counsel and disciple for the Glory of God.
In 2005, having concluded that God was assigning them a different field of service, Dr. Mack and Carol moved to South Africa to continue their ministry in an area of greater need. Before leaving the country, however, Dr. Mack enlisted the help of Dr. John Street of the Masters University to assume the teaching role in Fort Worth. Soon thereafter, a ministry board was formed and six churches in the greater Fort Worth area agreed to band together to make the training available free of charge. Now the training conference received not only a firm foundation but also a new name: Fort Worth Biblical Counseling Association (FWBCA).
Today FWBCA’s training and equipping ministry offers instruction three times annually from a whole slate of well-known experts in the field of biblical counseling, and we continue to do so free of charge. If you are interested in being equipped to help people experience true growth and change by the power of the Spirit and the word, then we invite you to attend our next event. And while you’re at it, bring a friend. We would count it a privilege to make your acquaintance.
